Day 7: Key West

We drove from Islamorada to Key West late this morning, about 85 miles. Lots of great scenery; a kazillion bridges connecting all these islands.

Key West is an interesting town, at one time in the 1800's the largest city in Florida. It reminded us somewhat of Ocracoke and other spots at home because it is at the "end of the road" and a lot of people come here to escape something/someone back home. Usually it's the rules and structure. For example, I saw guys smoking pot in the open for the first time in my life.

We did a lot of walking around the historic section of town and took some pics at the southernmost point in the U.S. Lunch was at a great Cuban restaurant.

Gail works every day quite a bit taking care of business. I got to start another project I've been wanting to do, taking a look at the actions of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark that teach us about leadership. So now I've got two writing projects in the works.

She wanted to try some stone crabs, so we ate at Bentley's. The crabs were OK, but I like our blue crabs better. Again (for the last time) we shared a piece of Key Lime Pie...

Tomorrow we're up and off to Ft. Myers. In 1975 I did an internship in a church there and we're going to visit the lady who with her (now late) husband, opened their home to a 19 year old for the summer. She's a Facebook friend! And I haven't seen her in 30 years.

Enjoy the pics.

  1. love the pics of gail "the dancer". Pot smoking in public on Maui has been popular for quite some time. Maui is another "escape" place.

  2. I took that pic of her right after the Cuban food. Looks like it started working right away. Maybe it was the marijuana smoke wafting in the breeze...

  3. I love the pics! What a hoot. When we were in Key West there was an interesting wedding parade that came barreling down the street with clowns and people on stilts. It's surely interesting. We ate at a restaurant on the pier by the big ships. Not sure what it was called. Loving your updates! :) Fun to travel with you. You look more and more relaxed as the days go on.
