Day 27: The Big Sur coast

I'll be brief, catching up today because yesterday we didn't have internet access. And we want to get back on the road!

Tuesday we stopped in San Simeon, CA to tour the Hearst Castle, the home that Wm. Randolph Hearst built in the 1920's and 30's. If you want to see the premier example of extravagance and indulgence there it is. How can some people have so much money (esp. at a time when the world was so depressed) that they can spend it so lavishly? Makes you wonder. If you have seen "Citizen Kane", it is a movie loosely based on Hearst's life.

From there we stayed on CA Hwy 1 as it winds up the most amazing coastline, much of it high (and I mean high) directly above the water and rocks below. We saw bookoodles of elephant seals and some pretty high swells. We took something like 50 photos because at every turn it was so spectacular, even on a foggy, rainy day. When I get a chance I'll post more photos here and on Facebook.

We met Robin and Donna Davies way back in the late 70's during our stay at Berean church in Orange, CA. They were brand new Christians, struggling with their marriage. Last night we listened in their living room as they told how God not only saved their souls, but saved their marriage as well. And to their shock placed them in ministry. Robin now pastors the First Baptist Church (name change coming in a couple of weeks!) of Cupertino, CA. It was fun getting reacquainted after so long. And the steak dinner they cooked was awesome as well!

Cupertino is a suburb of San Jose (yes, we now know the way). So when we leave here in a bit we're heading back to the coast, Half Moon Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and points north. Hopefully I'll be able to get some more pics up tonight when we settle in to our motel...whereever that may be.

  2. I toured Hearst Castle when in Monteray for some training many years ago. You said it right - very extravagant. I also got to drive Hwy 1 and was very tense - I am not use to my mountains and ocean being so close together but it does make for beautiful scenery. Looks like you are having lots of fun!
