Day 28: Half Moon Bay to Santa Rosa

It's hard to believe, but today ends our 4th week on the road!
This morning we left our friends Robin and Donna Davies and their wonderful hospitality and headed west to the coast and north again.

Our first stop (after a really good lunch at Tres Amigos) was the beach at Half Moon Bay. We both walked a bit on the beach, then sat in the car for a while for me to do some reading (thanks Adam for a great book!) and for Gail to catch up on some work.

Hwy 1 then winds back uphill with some (again) scary turns and incredible overlooks over the bay. Surf was definitely up, dude. By this time we were about 15 miles from San Francisco. The hwy goes from a two lane mountain road creeping along to a freeway to a boulevard in the city before emerging from a tunnel at the foot of the famed Golden Gate Bridge. Across the bridge we pulled off and took some pics of the bridge and the city.

Then it was back to winding uphill again through redwoods and overlooking great ocean vistas. Then back down...and back up... Today was my turn to get a little queezy as Gail was driving. Note to self: Don't try to look down and read while on these roller coaster roads!

Eventually we decided to head inland to Santa Rosa for the night, driving through miles of dairy farms and terrain not unlike the Shenandoah Valley. Our goal tomorrow is to do some serious driving and get to see the big Redwoods.

Gail here - these past 2 days, I have seen some incredible scenery along the left coast, unlike anything on our coast. Very few beaches for walking and swimming, but waves crashing against rocks and cliffs, absolutely beautiful.
